When it comes to the setting of the book then, It set in a small town of Pineville and follows. Autumn’s journey throughout all four years of high school. In the story Autumn reconnects with her childhood best friend and neighbor Finny. And realizes she has a crush on him. Finny, on the other hand, never stopped loving Autumn since their childhood.

Yet, once they acknowledge their feelings for each other, life throws a curveball, and Autumn loses her soulmate. The story’s villain, Sylvie Whitehouse, plays a key part in Autumn and Finny’s relationship. Sylvie stirs up trouble between Autumn and Finny because. She dates Finny for most of the book and limits Finny’s time with Autumn out of jealousy.

After If He Had Been With Me prologue ends the story with years before the incident. The story takes the readers where the story revolves around Autumn and Finny. They  are childhood friends who once shared an unbreakable bond but drifted apart after the beginning of their high school. Autumn’s story takes the readers through a journey of a teenager battling with internal and societal expectations. 

Then gradually, Autumn and Finny find their ways back to each other and fall in love. But then only to get separated by Finny’s death. Following this readers given the foreshadowing of the prologue that lured them into the story. It is after this revelation that the powerful hook that kept readers to grip on made a false pretense to the otherwise  bland plot of the book. Infact, the monotonous voice of the writing could taken as an attempt by the author to explain Autumn’s mentality but instead it made the book appear flat.
